ASV clutch lever

I got a really good deal on an ASV and put it on the cub this past weekend. I was a little skeptical because for some reason there is no free play in the lever and the clutch arm in the cases. The clutch seems to let out in the last 1/3 of the release of the lever. I put probably 7-8 passes on it this weekend and it did fine. I'm gonna drain the oil and tear into it and put a pancake bearing in and do some re-adjustment, I was just wondering if you are SUPPOSE to have free play in the lever, and would the best way to do this be with the adjustment in the clutch, then adjust the handle accordingly?

i use the same thing. Mine doesnt really have any play either

I had a buddy put an ASV on his with a DD lockup and said it wouldnt work. He couldn't realy remember why he just remembers not using it. I have a stock clutch cable too, not a Terry Cable or anything cool like that lol. All it means with no play is that the ball and rod and lever are in constant contact right?

i am using the same setup. if there is no play then the rod and ball are always pushing the adjuster

Well obviously since ur running it you think it's ok, or it doesn't bother you enough to change it?

nope, i like it. I dont rely on the arrows to adjust it. i turn the adjuster in until i feel it hit the rod/ball then back it off like 1/4 turn and thighten everything down

Yeah I forgot you had said that. So do you think you've got some free play in the rod/ball but hte lever just isn't showing it/allowing you to feel it?

yea there is a tiny bit. I just have enough so the rod and ball dont have pressure on it.

Oh ya, its very nice, very smooth so far, just a little weird so far. i'll have to play with the adjustment some.

Set your clutch arm (on the case) the same as you would normally. Set the free play on the lever as you would normally. The only difference on the ASV lever is it has an adjustable reach lever. If you adjust the lever further out from the handlebar, you will have more travel to disengage the pressure plate. The further you adjust the lever out, the further out it will be when the clutch begins to grab. I like to adjust the lever for a little more reach to allow the clutch plates to separate more when the lever is pulled.

Yeah I like it to make sure it's seperating too, just some peace of mind that nothing will get too hot/gall/weld up like has happened before. The no free-play thing is weird though, and may be because of the springs in the handle itself. I'll take a gander at it tonight and see from a technical stand-point

they are just quality levers, the angles the levers sit at give you great leverage so your forarm doesnt get fatigued as fast, the metal used is quality. fully rebuildable, and totally adjustable

I got an EZ pull lever from FAST and it's awesome, it has a needle bearing on the lever itself....

I don't actually like the looks of the ASV levers...they're more for moto/trails IMO...not drag racing...

That's what i was thinking, i've seen em' on some big drag bikes though but stand out pretty big

The ASV is comin off tonight. I hate it so far. No free play in it, adjustment is all weird, clutch is slipping with a lock-out, etc.

Gonna throw an old crappy EZ-pull on and see how it does.
