We are building my son a blaster for his first real drag atv, have already got a +8 swingarm, and a pretty much stock motor. I was wondering if a RDZ pipe was about the best pipe for this type of bike or if there was another brand that was better? I am really wanting a out of frame pipe. Thanks ahead of time for any info and tips you may give me.
Once we get it built, he is going to do the upkeep on it, so we are going to run gas for now,and see how this works out. He has been racing his 125 raptor and since he has gotten a little braver he has doing wheel stands, and we don't want to mess it up, so we had this old blaster setting here with a fresh crank, rod and piston,so this is how we have came to building a blaster. I have seen some dyno sheets from RDZ verses the shearer , and it looked like the RDZ made alittle more HP . Thanks for the advice and any other tips you might have.
i would run the sb rdz on a stockish sized cylinder. will this bike have a wheelie bar? if so, shorten it up. unless your boy is 200+ lbs. get a lockup, clutches are puny in them. if you are making good power it is impossible to hold a clutch. at least get the rdz springs if you are going to try without a lockup. driveline extra plate clutches work good.
yeah lockup clutch. i read engine is pretty stock. you should be ok without a lockup. might want to try the +8 at first if not using a wheelie bar. what surface you racing on?
Yes it is a stock motor, lowered it with solid struts, running pro wedges. We most of the time run on tilled dirt about 3 to 4 inches deep. We are hoping the +8 and stuts keep it from just standing straight up, I don't mind it coming up a little bit, but I don't figure the stock 200 is going to do too much, just trying to get him use to it before we do anything else to the motor. I just hope I am going in the right direction so far, it has been almost 20 years since I was drag racing atv's , it has came a long ways since then. Thanks for all the help.
i do not think you will have a problem with it standing right up. on modded blasters we have ran +6 with a bar and 12 stag extemes. that light rider and pro wedges, should be fine with the +8.
no problem. the rear sprockets are the same. the front is different. i dont know for sure on a stockish engine. we ran 14/41 last time out, 2nd-5th on a bigbore/stroker.
I ran an all stock bottom end, no lock-up with +8 and 10 paddle extremes on alky, with no problems. My kid weighed around 100lbs also. We ran a 14-41 gear. We even put a little nitro in it last year.
We will only be running 300 feet at the most, just really wanting him to get some good seat time this year to see if he is going to be able to handle it, to be his age, he is deadly on the lights, then maybe next year do some more mods to it. What kind of time should be expected out of this set up, I don't want to expect to much out of it, just wondering so I will have some kind of idea to tune too.
That was what I was looking for, just a goal or idea. I race a 4x4 truck in a modified class, so this is something we do together, I may end up getting my lt250r back out if he really likes it,and race it myself, just don't know if my body can handle anymore. LOL. Thanks for all the help, I am sure I will have some more questions later on, maybe I can get some pics on here before long. Thanks again
no problem! anything you need just ask. glad to hear that you can spend quality time with your boy doing something you both love. break that ole racer out! i have a had a few of them over the years, nice machines. you can handle it, not like your racing MX! hahaha
Already have another question. Has anyone ever heard of not running a base gasket between the jug and cases, and what kind of numbers on the quish test should it be ? Sorry for all the questions. LOL Thanks again.
never tried it, it can work and it can leak. i have heard both sides. cometic can make you any thickness spacers or gaskets you need. along with coppergaskets.us. id get the squish around .050 depending on other details, thats a modest guess.
I had been told that we could run it with no gasket on the machined surfaces and that it would help it a little bit. Should I be looking for a different carb or will the stock carb be fine on this setup? Thanks again
is it ported? no base gasket is going to change the port timing and the squish, along with other, more minor things. there is alot i do not know to able to be able to advise the use of no base gasket. or a certain thickness base gasket. the stock carb is only 26mm and is too small for a drag engine. what fuel will you run?
No port work yet, Had a stupid moment, sorry about that, I was thinking about compression, for got about port timing,we got that figured out now, got my head thinking straight now, prolly going to run VP 110 and a 39 mm carb I think to start with. sorry for the confusion.
I think we are going to try to get it together after Christmas and do a little bit of test and tuning on it , and then tear it back apart for paint. Thanks for all the help.
Well we got it running , and have run into problems. It runs really well on the bottom end and it starts cutting out at a little over half throttle, we have changed the jets up and down with hardly any improvements. Could it be that the RDZ pipe is to big and not letting it build any back presure, or have I not got the carb right yet. Thanks for any help cause I am about ready to pull my hair out !!! LOL
i built for my little brother but he feels more comprtable riding without his front and rear plastics...idk
