I overheated this motor (ran the tank too low), but when I took it apart I didn't find any damage. I went ahead and installed new pistons, rings, wrist pin bearings, o-rings, and base gasket. When I started it up, the rpms surged and the motor instantly got hot. It never even idled before, now it won't let revs down. I know it's gonna get a little hot due to the new rings, but not this hot. I ran 1/4 throttle through 3rd gear for 1 to 2 minutes, then it dieseled when I tried to shut it off. I re-torqued the head and cylinders, and didn't run it again.

When I tried to purge it, it got hot and the rpms surged still. It got so hot that I didn't even get it purged all the way. WTF is going on here?

If the leak down test was done properly, 5.5 PSI after 6 minutes is more than acceptable.

Take the carbs off, make sure the slides are closed ALL the way, back the idle screws out and make sure the slides close all the way.
Since you ran the tank low, take the carbs completely apart and clean the pilot jets and all circuits/holes in the carb with brake cleaner, and a fine wire through the pilot jets. I'd bet you clogged something....picked up some dirt/debris from the bottom of the tank.
You know how small the pilot jet holes are, a grain of sand can plug them up pretty easily...

That was the next thing I was gonna do. Alky is funny. You have a clogged pilot on gas and it won't start...I guess if you block the pilot on alky..it still pulls enough from the main and pj just to keep the motor running, albeit lean.

Thanks..that was the answer I was needing. If it still does this after cleaning the carbs, I'll let you know.
